Initial Concept for Assignment 1
Having gotten inspired from the current hype surrounding the movie Memoirs of a Geisha, I've decided to base the concept for Assignment 1 on the becoming of a Geisha. The entire process in the game wouldn't resemble anything like that of reality but rather, it shall contain certain real-world references, for example, the various components that make up a Geisha's dressing, etc.
The game would be essentially a board game that is played with the usual game pieces and a die while incorporating some elements of a card game, I think. In addition, there would be an additional feature of playing with "alliances" that could be included or excluded from the playing process, but such would nonetheless affect the manner (strategy) in which the game is being played.
How would the game be played?
There are 2 fundamental stages to one becoming a Geisha, namely from being a 'Maiko' (sort of like a Geisha understudy) before becoming a 'Geisha'.
In the game, players would initially take on the roles of Maikos and their game pieces would be placed at the respective starting points at the corners of the game board. Each player would be given a certain amount of gold coins? (haven’t decided on the exact amount yet) before the game begins. Players would then take turns to throw the die and move their pieces according to the number indicated on it in any manner to reach the various places indicated on the board (which works like a map of sorts). There are 5 different places with each meant for a different purpose and special marked areas that read either “WILD” or “CHALLENGE”. In addition, the game would be played with 4 types of cards, namely Assets, Patrons, Performances, Alliances (optional).
The objective of the game is to earn enough money to acquire a full set of assets that make up a Geisha’s dressing. There are 6 items to be collected, namely Make-up, Kimono, Obi, Collar, Geta and Wig, all which would be pre-assigned with different values. This could be done in any order and in the course of playing, the Assets held in possession by each player would be displayed but with their values hidden from sight.
There are a number of ways to do this:
(1) Buy them at the Geisha Shop but the choice of item and its stat is random, depending on the Asset Card drawn after a player has “entered” the shop.
(2) Carry out a mutual exchange at the Gathering Hall with another player after a player has “entered” the hall and “called” for a gathering.
(3) Challenge a fellow player/Maiko and win over any Asset Card held in the former’s possession when a player “entered” a CHALLENGE zone.
Under CHALLENGE mode, the initiator would decide on which Asset card to base the challenge on (e.g. "Kimono" card versus "kimono" card) and the players with a higher value wins.
After having acquired a complete set of different Assets, the player/Maiko would ascend the spiralling “Steps of Destiny” (sounds funny :p) to reach the centre of the game board before being declared a winner/ full-fledged Geisha.
On an ending note, I had actually hoped to include the becoming of Samurais into the game (so that there could be more choices for players to decide what and who they want to be as well as more interaction). However, for simplicity's sake, I shall just stick to that of Geishas and see how the various mechanisms work first.

Sounds very interesting! I think you should resist adding in the Samurai version, as its already sounding quite complicated... :)
So there's really 2 stages to the game, right? Accumulating assets, and then ascending the stairs... once a player starts ascending, is there any way the others can try to stop them? If not, then it could be that this part of the game will really just become a matter of rolling the dice, with everyone else who isn't on the stairs having little chance to catch up. Perhaps some of the steps have penalty actions on them, which cause some setback? Or other Maiko on the stairs could cause some sort of setback?
